INTERDEPARTMENTAL MEMO:

Capt. Artemis Echo (MSc; D. Clin. Psych.)
Human Resources Dept.
Starfleet Command
San Francisco

RE: Recruitment (Cadet Applications) (Fwd. as necessary)

To Whom It May Concern:

Several members of the Starfleet community will shortly be involved in a continuous recruitment plan. This plan has been introduced as a direct result of the Narada Incident to replace the annual intake previously utilised. Continuous recruitment has been proposed as a necessary step in returning the Academy, and thus Starfleet, to its full functioning capacity.

Much of the cadet application process is automated and requires no change. However, Starfleet feels that the all-important interview stage must be retained due to its significance in determining an applicant’s individual character and suitability for academic tracks. As the recent losses of personnel include many of the officers involved in the interview state, the intention of this memo is to provide all necessary Starfleet members with a basic understanding of how to proceed. It is expected that this will eventually encompass all Academy Cadets as well as Staff, due to the personnel requirements in continual recruitment.
___________________

Please find the structured interview attached, including administration guidelines. Interviewee responses should be transcribed verbatim in the spaces provided to be later assessed by the Recruitment Board.

Interviewers should take particular note of the four questions (Q18-21) with two provided answers. These answers should be read aloud to the interviewee, who will select the option they feel best suits them. These questions have been included as an adaptation of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator analysis (MBTI; Briggs & Myers, Pre-Warp 1995). As with all personality tests, the results of these four questions should be taken as a guide only. Final decisions should be based on the interview as a whole.
____________________

Recall that the prime directive of the interview stage is to determine the suitability of the applicant for the Academy as a whole and the academic track within. Each Cadet should be assigned one of the five conclusions: Tactics, Operations, Medical Sciences, Exploratory Sciences or Civilian. Please find a personality analysis of suitable characteristics for each of these attached.

Do not hesitate to contact me with questions.
Regards,

Capt. Artemis Echo

Q2. How did you find out about Elite of the Fleet? Someone posted about it on ontd_pinto

Q3. When did you first become interested in Star Trek? I heard about STXI when it first came out, but I was unable to see it until just this past January. That, combined wtih a torrent of people talking about it on tumblr, I quickly got swept up in the fandom and watched and learned as much of it as I could.

Q4. Why have you decided to join Elite of the Fleet? It sounds like a great way to get more involved in the fandom, and I would like to further excercise and improve my writing and fandom skills.

Q5. Who is your favourite Star Trek character? Spock, without question. Not only can I relate to him, but I find his character very endearing and he would certainly be someone I would want to know were he real.

Q6. And the least? I don't dislike anyone, but if I had to say the character I care for the least in most situations it would be Chapel.

Q7. Which television (or film) series is your favourite? Reboot & The Original Series

Q2. How did you find out about Elite of the Fleet? jihime47 on ontd_pinto

Q3. When did you first become interested in Star Trek? Late in the summer of 2009, my mom and I went to see the new Star Trek movie. I got sucked in by all the excitement and hope and spirit of adventure. It was love at first sight.

Q4. Why have you decided to join Elite of the Fleet? I've really enjoyed my time in the other land comm in which I've participated. Elite of the Fleet seems even more immersive and particularly well-organized. I'm also sure I'll gain a greater appreciation for all the various incarnations of Star Trek.

Q5. Who is your favourite Star Trek character? I'm tempted to say Spock, because I really love the arc he goes through in the new film, trying to figure out the two halves of his nature and where and how they come together. However, I think in terms of flat-out characterization, I have to say Scotty, because Simon Pegg plays him so well and I love the flashes of genius we get intermixed with his irreverent nature.

Q6. And the least? Maybe Nero? Destroying the entire Federation in revenge seems a bit drastic. But I do have to give Eric Bana props for playing it as well as he did.

Q7. Which television (or film) series is your favourite? I suppose the reboot by default, although I have seen Wrath of Khan, and TOS is growing on me quite a bit. Even my discovery and appreciation of TOS reflects back into my love for the reboot, though, because it just makes me excited to discover where the movies will go next.

Q2. How did you find out about Elite of the Fleet? I saw the advert for it when I was checking the daily post on the Star Trek Newsletter

Q3. When did you first become interested in Star Trek? I first became interested in Star Trek when I was a little girl. My dad was a big fan so when I was old enough to understand what was going on, he sat me down to watch TNG and the rest is history. I was stuck on Star Trek from that moment on.

Q4. Why have you decided to join Elite of the Fleet? I was looking for a way into the fandom and this seemed like a good opportunity.

Q5. Who is your favourite Star Trek character? I would have to say Captain Picard. He was the first character that I liked when I started watching, and he kind of stuck with me through the years. I rewatch all of the movies' that he's in whenever I can.

Q6. And the least? I don't have a least favorite character. I do have a least favorite characterization. I dislike the way that Uhura is portrayed in most Reboot Spock/Kirk fics. The authors make her out to be really bitchy and in the way of Spock/Kirk's "true love."

Q7. Which television (or film) series is your favourite? The Next Generation will always be my favorite as I have many fond memories of it, but I did enjoy the Reboot movie a lot and it is what made me want to get into fandom.

CIVILIAN LIFE:

Q1. Name: Murf

Q2. How did you find out about Elite of the Fleet?
I was searching for Pinto fic, and I wandered onto jihime47’s journal, only to find that she’d been accepted into the Fleet, and I researched from there.

Q3. When did you first become interested in Star Trek?
May of 2009. I went to see Reboot with my boyfriend, and I was lost from there on out.

Q4. Why have you decided to join Elite of the Fleet?
I really miss the Ship Wars, which I participated in earlier this year. I love these sorts of comms, and I love to have fun with other Trek fans.

Q5. Who is your favourite Star Trek character?
I’m not sure. I love McCoy, but I also adore Scotty and Chekov. I think I’ll go with TOS McCoy on this one. McCoy’s grumpy and all, but he’s got a heart of gold, and I’ll admit I have a weakness for his pretty blue eyes. I actually just read the Trek novel The Wounded Sky by Diane Duane, and she characterized him as, despite his grumpy outside, having a great respect and love of life, and, to quote: “this passionate allegiance to life, this fierce charity that wished health and joy to everything that lived.”

Q6. And the least?
T’Pring. I realize she didn’t have many choices in her situation, but I hate that she had to pick Kirk. She also just has this air about her of hateful vengefulness that I can’t stand in people. I actually feel bad for Stonn – with a “consort” like that, he’s in for a long ride.

Q7. Which television (or film) series is your favourite?
I like TOS best, but I’m not familiar with anything but TOS and Reboot. TOS is wonderful; it’s campy, but it’s way more cerebral and philosophical than any other TV show I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. Also, I’m an admitted Kirk/Spock shipper, and the whole of the TOS movie series is like slash heaven for me. Much as I love Reboot, there’s not enough in it.

Q2. How did you find out about Elite of the Fleet? I kept seeing it while browsing Star Trek communities and decided to check it out.

Q3. When did you first become interested in Star Trek? I grew up watching it with my dad, who's a fan and has every season and every movie, plus we used to catch it on TV all the time. We went to see Reboot on opening night and I instantly fell in love with the movie. Funnily enough though, I was never obsessed until a few months ago when I started watching/rewatching TOS and TNG episodes and I couldn't help but get sucked in!

Q4. Why have you decided to join Elite of the Fleet? It looks fun, I've never participated in this fandom or a challenge community before, and I don't have any friends who like Star Trek. Also I totally want to join Starfleet.

Q5. Who is your favourite Star Trek character? I love Spock! I love Bones! Actually I love pretty much everyone, but the character I love the most has got to be... Data. What's not to love about a super intelligent, completely rational android who's always trying to grasp human behavior and does the weirdest, dorkiest, most hilarious things with a straight face? And there's something endearing about his childlike curiosity, and the way he always strives to better himself. He's different. Unique. He doesn't quite fit in, but he knows being different doesn't make him any less of a person, and if anything that makes him a more admirable character. I love seeing how he views humanity, and he's got a lot of great lines because he points out a lot of things that most people would never mention, be it funny or thought-provoking or both at the same time. Many of my favorite TNG episodes are Data episodes because they, along with the Picard episodes really, bring up the most interesting issues [The Measure of a Man, anyone?]. On top of that, he's an artist. And built an incredibly adorable daughter. And enjoys holodeck adventures. And is fully functional and anatomically correct. Alright, I'll stop gushing now.

Q6. And the least? I can't think of any single character that I really hate or dislike, only that the behavior of random characters who show up for just one episode to be convenient occasionally bother me, and I can say the same about how most of the women in TOS were written. To answer this question though, I'll say McGivers from Space Seed. I can understand if she's attracted to Khan, but I can't understand her betraying the ship for him. It's annoying to see her being so infatuated that she'd do anything he says, and even though she later saved Kirk it was still her fault for agreeing to help Khan in the first place. I don't get how she didn't see this whole mess coming when she decided to help him, or even if she did, why she still went along with it. But anyway, I don't really have an overall least favorite character.

Q7. Which television (or film) series is your favourite? While The Next Generation will always have a place in my heart for being the first series I ever loved as a child, my current favorite is The Original Series. I think the characters and their relationships with one another are interesting, and the whole thing is just so fun to watch, despite, or maybe even because of, its being so old. The effects and costumes are cheesy, yet I love those, the stories, the adventure, and seeing how they first handled doing Star Trek over forty years ago. I love this classic philosophical sci-fi. I do admit I never got around to watching a lot of Enterprise though, and I sadly don't remember much of Deep Space Nine.
